Safety Tips for Burning Candles and Essential Oils

Candle HoldersBurning candles and essential oils is completely safe and is not putting your home at increased risk of fire. However, every source of open fire including candles and aromatherapy burners should be handled with great care.

To enjoy the unique ambiance which is created by the light emitted by burning candles safely, you should always burn them in a candle holder which should be properly sized. If you would like to burn tea candles for instance you should choose a candle holder which is specially designed for tea candles. Despite the fact that they are typically encased in a thin metal cover and are generally safe if burned on a heat resistant surface, you are highly recommended to burn them exclusively in a candle holder. Due to their small size and relatively low weight, they can easily be moved by draught. But if burned in a candle holder, there is no risk of draught moving the candles. In addition, they look more appealing and create a sort of magic atmosphere if burned in a beautifully made candle holder.

Burning essential oils involves the use of aromatherapy burner which is extremely safe as well but it should also be handled very carefully. The greatest safety concern in burning essential oils in aromatherapy burner is water evaporation before the candle is extinguished. To prevent this from happening, an aromatherapy burner should never be left unattended. And just like candle holder, it should be placed on a heat resistant and flat surface which is out of reach to children and pets. In addition to paying attention to the surface, you should also pay attention to the objects nearby the candle holder or aromatherapy burner. Both should be kept away from flammable objects, especially curtains and fabrics which easily catch on fire.

Before you light a candle, you should make sure that the wick is not too long no matter if you will put it in a candle holder or aromatherapy burner. The longer the wick the larger the flame which, however, does not only burn the candle faster but automatically increases the risk of fire. The tea candle wick usually is not long but you are highly recommended to trim it if it is longer than 1 centimetre. Also, keep it short while the candle is burning by trimming it with scissors every couple of hours or so.

In the end, it is important to mention that essential oils are flammable and should never be burned undiluted. To create a pleasant fragrance, add only three to four drops into the oil holder and fill it with water. Also, be sure to keep essential oils stored out of reach to children because most of them are toxic if ingested. The use of aromatherapy burners should be avoided by pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions such as epilepsy. Burning essential oils around children is safe but only for a short period of time.
